Q: What is the purpose of the Manitoba Association of Medical Assistants?

A: We are a non-profit incorporated organization that promotes medical para-professionals in the healthcare field.

Q: What is a medical para-professional?

A: A para-professional in the medical field is an individual who is certified and works side by side with a professional. Many times working independently and doing much of the work that the professional cannot do due to time constraints and workload.

Q: Are there any salaried employees in the Manitoba Association of Medical Assistants?

A: No, everyone is on a volunteer basis.

Q: Will M.A.M.A. take the place of a union?

A: No. The M.A.M.A. is not a union. We promote para-professionals in the workplace, by pursuing education, standardization, accountability, we increase public awareness of the quality of care provided in the interest and safety of the public.

Q: What is the difference between the purpose of our union and our association?

A: The union is legally responsible to negotiate a contract for the members and ensure the employer honors that contract. The association promotes a certain group of individuals to facilitate public awareness of the educational levels required to provide quality care to the public.

Q: Do I have to mail my completed application, photocopies of certificates, and membership fee to the association?

A: No, you may give your completed package to the person who gave it to you. You will be given/mailed a receipt for your membership fee.
